Rope Hang Time and Ninja Performance: A Coaching Observation

Andrew's experience in the Ninja Warrior community suggests that sustained gripping is worth paying attention to. A rope hang can be a convenient way to record one part of an athlete's training.

An observation, not a validated ranking predictor

This article does not provide a published dataset or statistical analysis linking Monkee Grip hang time to NWL leaderboard placement. It should not be read as evidence of a measured correlation or a promise that improving the test will improve competition rank.

What to record

Use the same rope, body position, assistance, chalk policy and end rule. Note the athlete's body mass and recent training fatigue. Compare repeat attempts under similar conditions.

Keep course skills in the program

Ninja performance also involves obstacle technique, transitions, footwork, pacing and decision-making. Use hangs as supplemental practice, not as a substitute for those skills. Start with support if necessary and finish before an uncontrolled release.
