Why Monkee Grips Are Built Differently

There are rope grips...

...and then there are Monkee Grips.

At first glance, many rope grips look similar.

A piece of rope.

A knot.

A wrap.

To most people, they appear nearly identical.

But after years of designing, testing, refining, and listening to thousands of customers, we've learned something important:

The smallest design decisions often make the biggest difference.

Every Monkee Grip is the result of hundreds of design choices—many of which most people never notice.

This page is about those choices.

Designed by an Athlete, Not a Factory

Monkee Grips weren't created because a factory wanted another fitness product.

They were created to solve a problem I experienced firsthand.

Like many athletes, I wanted to train for rope climbs. The problem was simple: most people don't have access to a climbing rope, and even if they do, they don't have the ceiling height or space to use one at home.

I wanted a tool that could recreate the demands of gripping a rope while being portable, affordable, and usable almost anywhere.

That's how Monkee Grips began.

At first, they were simply a way to make pull-ups, hangs, and carries feel more like climbing a rope.

But something unexpected happened.

People started using them for far more than rope climb training.

They attached them to pull-up bars.

They used them for farmer's carries.

They performed dead hangs, pull-ups, rows, and bodyweight exercises.

They discovered that almost every exercise became a grip exercise simply by replacing the handle.

That realization changed everything.

Instead of creating a rope climb trainer, Monkee Grips evolved into an entirely new philosophy of training.

The Monkee Grip Method

Most people train grip as a separate workout.

They finish their normal workout...

...and then spend another 10 minutes doing grip exercises.

The Monkee Grip Method asks a different question:

Why not strengthen your grip while performing the exercises you're already doing?

Every pull-up.

Every row.

Every carry.

Every cable exercise.

Every hang.

Instead of adding more exercises to your workout, Monkee Grips transform the exercises you're already doing into opportunities to build stronger hands, wrists, and forearms.

That's the philosophy we've continued building ever since.

Everything we've developed—from our different grip materials to the Extension Slings and Cable Adapter Kit—exists for one reason:

To make grip training a natural part of every workout instead of something you have to remember to do afterward.

Reinforced from the Inside Out

One of the most important features of a Monkee Grip is something you'll probably never see.

Beneath the branded black wrap is a permanent steel reinforcement that mechanically secures the grip. It's an extra layer of protection designed to ensure your Monkee Grip stays together, even after years of hard training.

The outer wrap isn't what holds the grip together—it's there to provide a clean finish and protect the rope. Even if the wrap were to slide off from improper use, the internal steel reinforcement remains permanently secured, so the Monkee Grip stays intact.

This is one of those engineering decisions that most people will never notice.

That's exactly how we intended it.

The Gym Pro Upgrade

As Monkee Grips found their way into commercial gyms, we discovered something interesting.

In a home gym, the owner understands how the grips are meant to be used.

In a commercial gym, dozens of different people may use the same pair every day. Some inevitably grab the protective black band instead of the rope, even though it's not intended to be used as the gripping surface.

To help reduce the wear that can result from this type of repeated misuse, we developed the Gym Pro Upgrade.

The Gym Pro version incorporates an additional proprietary reinforcement beneath the protective wrap that helps keep the wrap securely in place under heavy commercial use.

For most home gym owners, this extra protection simply isn't necessary, which is why our standard Monkee Grips don't include it by default.

Instead, we offer it as an option for commercial facilities, coaches, and athletes who expect exceptionally high usage.

Handcrafted in America

Every Monkee Grip begins as rope.

What transforms it into a Monkee Grip is craftsmanship.

Unlike many manufacturing processes, rope splicing cannot be automated. Every Monkee Grip is individually spliced by hand by skilled craftsmen who take pride in producing a clean, consistent, and durable finished product.

We believe the details matter.

A well-executed splice creates a grip that not only looks better, but performs consistently from one pair to the next.

Before a Monkee Grip ever leaves our shop, every splice is inspected to ensure it meets the standards we've built our reputation on.

Proudly Made in America

Every Monkee Grip is proudly made in the USA.

That includes our cotton models.

The cotton is grown in America, spun into rope in America, and assembled by hand right here in the United States.

Keeping our manufacturing close to home allows us to maintain the quality standards our customers expect while supporting American manufacturing and craftsmanship.

We're proud of that.

Why Smaller Builds Stronger

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"Why isn't the rope thicker?"

It's a fair question.

Many people assume a thicker rope automatically creates a harder workout.

The truth is, rope doesn't work the same way as a thick bar.

Grip Is About Friction

When you're holding a barbell or pull-up bar, part of the load is supported by the bar resting against your fingers and palm.

A rope is different.

There is no ledge to support the load.

Your hands must generate enough friction to keep the rope from sliding through your grip.

The amount of friction you can create depends largely on how much force your fingers can apply.

Why Diameter Matters

As the rope becomes smaller in diameter, there is less contact area between your hand and the rope.

With less surface area available, your grip has to generate even more force to create enough friction to prevent slipping.

The result is a grip that's significantly more demanding—even though the rope itself is smaller.

This is why we intentionally chose a diameter that challenges your grip rather than making it easier.

Built for Stronger Athletes

Over the years we've been amazed by the strength of many Monkee Grip athletes.

Some became so proficient with our original grips that they wanted an even greater challenge.

Rather than simply telling them to add more weight, we created the Level 2 Monkee Grip.

By reducing the rope diameter even further, Level 2 requires substantially greater grip force while maintaining the same natural rope feel.

It's one of the most demanding rope grip trainers we've ever built.

Every Millimeter Matters

The difference between grip diameters may look small.

It isn't.

A few millimeters can dramatically change how much force your hands must generate to hold onto the rope.

That's why every Monkee Grip diameter has been chosen intentionally—not for appearance, but for performance.

Harder isn't an accident.

It's part of the Monkee Grip philosophy.

Why We Still Use Natural Jute

Natural jute has been the heart of Monkee Grips since the very beginning.

After testing countless materials, we continue to choose jute because nothing else matches its combination of texture, feel, and grip performance.

It provides:

  • Outstanding grip texture
  • Exceptional tactile feedback
  • A natural rope feel
  • The authentic climbing-style experience that inspired Monkee Grips

Not All Jute Is Created Equal

Many jute ropes are manufactured using JBO (Jute Batching Oil), a petroleum-based oil that can leave the rope with a strong chemical odor.

We didn't think that belonged in a product people train with.

That's why our jute is manufactured using high-quality, fragrance-free vegetable oils instead of traditional petroleum-based batching oils. The result is a cleaner, more pleasant rope without the lingering petroleum smell commonly associated with lower-quality rope grips.

We believe the material you hold in your hands should feel natural—not smell like a machine shop.

What About Shedding?

Natural jute fibers do shed.

That's simply part of working with a natural fiber.

To improve the out-of-the-box experience, every pair of Monkee Grips goes through an additional proprietary finishing process designed to reduce initial shedding before it ever reaches you.

You'll still notice some light shedding during the first couple of weeks of training as the remaining loose surface fibers work their way out, but this decreases substantially with regular use.

What you're left with is the same texture and authentic rope feel that has made jute our most popular material.

Prefer Zero Shedding?

If you'd rather not deal with any natural fiber shedding, we also offer our cotton Monkee Grips.

They provide a cleaner training experience with virtually no shedding while maintaining the same Monkee Grip philosophy of durability, craftsmanship, and performance.

Different materials.

Different feel.

One uncompromising standard of quality.

Why We Didn't Make Them Longer

One of the easiest ways to make a rope grip is to simply leave more rope hanging below the attachment point.

At first glance, that might seem like a good idea.

More rope must be better...

Right?

Wrong.

When we designed Monkee Grips, we asked a simple question:

How much rope do you actually need?

The answer was surprisingly little.

Long Enough to Work. Short Enough to Stay Out of the Way.

Monkee Grips were designed with a handle length of approximately 7 inches.

That's enough rope to comfortably fit virtually every hand size while still allowing for the natural slipping and repositioning that occurs during training.

Beyond that, additional rope doesn't improve your grip workout.

It simply creates more material to swing, twist, and get in the way.

Think About a Screwdriver

A screwdriver handle is only as long as it needs to be.

Adding another foot to the handle wouldn't make it a better screwdriver.

It would simply make it awkward to use.

We believe rope grips should follow the same philosophy.

Designed for Real Training

Long rope handles might not seem like a problem when you're doing dead hangs or pull-ups.

In those exercises, the extra rope simply hangs beneath your hands and out of the way.

But Monkee Grips weren't designed for just one exercise.

They're designed to work across dozens of movements.

Think about performing:

  • Farmer's Carries
  • Cable Rows
  • Face Pulls
  • Tricep Pushdowns
  • Lat Pulldowns
  • Bicep Curls
  • Shrugs
  • Single-Arm Rows
  • Shoulder flies

Now imagine doing those exercises with three feet of rope hanging below each hand.

The rope would constantly swing, twist, brush against your body, catch on equipment, shed flurry of dust and make the movement more cumbersome than it needs to be.

The same is true when using Monkee Grips on a cable machine.

The goal is to challenge your grip—not wrestle with unnecessary rope.

Every Inch Has a Purpose

We designed Monkee Grips to provide exactly the amount of rope needed to train effectively—no more and no less.

Long enough to fit nearly every hand.

Long enough to allow natural movement.

Short enough to stay out of your way.

Because great equipment isn't about adding more.

It's about adding exactly what's needed—and removing everything that isn't.

We Inspect Every Grip

Quality doesn't happen by accident.

Every Monkee Grip is inspected before shipping.

We verify:

  • Rope length
  • Consistency
  • Steel reinforcement
  • Wrap quality
  • Overall construction

Because consistency matters.

When you purchase Monkee Grips, you're not buying an anonymous product off an assembly line.

You're buying something that has been individually checked before it reaches your hands.

Why Our Wrap Is Different

The black band at the end of every Monkee Grip isn't just there to display our logo.

It serves an important purpose.

Its job is to neatly secure the rope fibers together, protect the splice, and give the grip a clean, finished appearance.

Unlike ordinary tape, it won't unravel or peel apart over time.

But it's important to understand what it wasn't designed to do.

It's Not a Handle

The black band is not intended to be used as the gripping surface.

Monkee Grips are designed to be held by the rope itself.

If the band is repeatedly used as a handle instead of the rope, the constant friction can eventually cause it to slide off over time.

That isn't a structural failure.

It's simply using the product in a way it wasn't designed to be used.

Why That Doesn't Affect Safety

As we explained earlier, the structural strength of a Monkee Grip doesn't come from the outer band.

It comes from the permanent internal steel reinforcement hidden beneath it.

Even if the outer band were to slide off after repeated misuse, your Monkee Grip would remain every bit as strong and fully functional.

The only thing you'd lose is the clean finished appearance.

We designed it that way intentionally.

Because we believe cosmetic components should never be responsible for the structural integrity of the product.

The Gym Pro Upgrade

For commercial gyms, coaches, and athletes whose Monkee Grips are used by many different people, we developed the Gym Pro Upgrade.

In a commercial environment, it's common for new users to grab the protective band instead of the rope, even after being instructed not to.

The Gym Pro version incorporates an additional proprietary reinforcement system beneath the band that helps it remain securely in place under repeated high-use conditions.

Most home gym owners will never need this extra level of protection, which is why we offer it as an optional upgrade rather than making every customer pay for a feature they may never use.

Like every feature we build, the Gym Pro Upgrade exists because it solves a real problem encountered by real athletes.

Every Improvement Comes From Athletes

Monkee Grip isn't a product that was designed once and forgotten.

It continues to evolve.

Over the years we've introduced:

  • Black Cotton Monkee Grips
  • Level 2 Grips
  • Extension Slings
  • Cable Machine Adapter Kits
  • Gym Pro Wraps

Each improvement came from customer feedback, testing, and thousands of hours of training.

Our goal isn't simply to sell grips.

Our goal is to build the best grip training system available.

We Don't Build Products to Be Cheap

There will always be less expensive alternatives.

That's true of almost every product.

Our goal has never been to manufacture the cheapest rope grip.

Our goal is to build one that performs better, lasts longer, and continues improving year after year.

Sometimes that means using better materials.

Sometimes it means spending more time assembling each grip.

Sometimes it means saying no to shortcuts.

Quality isn't one decision.

It's hundreds of small decisions made consistently over time.

The Monkee Grip Philosophy

We believe great products are never finished.

They're refined.

Improved.

Tested.

Questioned.

And improved again.

That's why we continue developing new accessories, new materials, and new training tools.

Because our mission isn't simply to make rope grips.

It's to help athletes build stronger hands, stronger forearms, and stronger bodies.

Every Monkee Grip represents years of refinement, thousands of customer conversations, and an obsession with getting the details right.

That obsession is what makes Monkee Grip different.
